MADISON - Governor Jim Doyle appointed Kevin Opgenorth to the University of Wisconsin System’s Board of Regents today. Opgenorth will be replacing Thomas Shields as the non-traditional student representative. His appointment is effective June 9, 2008 and will expire May 1, 2010.
“Kevin has represented our nation proudly as a member of the U.S. Army, and I am confident he will do the same on the Board of Regents," Governor Doyle said. "He will bring a unique, and very important, perspective to the Board.”
Kevin Opgenorth is a student at the University of Wisconsin-Platteville where he is majoring in Business Administration and Economics. He recently returned to Platteville after three years in the U.S. Army including a one-year deployment in Iraq where he served as an Ammo Team Chief and Radio Transmission Officer. Opgenorth is active on campus as a member of the Student Senate, an officer in the Society for Advancement of Management, and is part of the Ad Hoc committee on inclement weather policy. Kevin lives in Platteville, Wisconsin and is planning to graduate in May, 2010.
“I want to thank Governor Doyle for this opportunity to serve,” Opgenorth said. “It is truly an honor for me. I am looking forward to representing the students while serving on the UW System Board of Regents.”
Appointed to a two year term, the non-traditional student regent is appointed to express the views of students not customarily represented, such as those with families, who are employed, or are returning veterans. Along with the student regent, the position gives students a seat at the table in the administration of their education.
