Governor Doyle Signs Bill to Stop Police Pay for Officers Fired for Serious Crimes

MILWAUKEE – Governor Jim Doyle today signed SB 176, a bill that stops payment to Milwaukee police officers after they are fired for committing a serious crime.

“With this bill, if a police officer is fired for a serious crime, pay appropriately stops after termination,” Governor Doyle said.  “Milwaukee has so many great, hardworking officers who have earned the public support, so I hope the bill I am signing today moves us past controversies and lets the public recognize Milwaukee’s cops for the good work they do.“

Governor Doyle thanked Senators Coggs and Carpenter and Representative Toles for their work on the bill.

Governor Doyle also signed the following 2 bills into law today:

Senate Bill 292 makes human trafficking and child trafficking felony offenses.  For human trafficking, a person who is convicted is subject to a fine of up to $100,000, imprisonment for up to 25 years, or both.  For child trafficking, a person who is convicted is subject to a fine of up to $100,000, imprisonment for up to 40 years, or both.

Governor Doyle thanked Senator Coggs and Representatives Jeskewitz and Kessler for their work on the bill.

Senate Bill 366 grants counties with a population above 500,000 to issue appropriation bonds on a one-time basis to help fund an employee retirement system.

Governor Doyle thanked Senators Coggs and Taylor and Representative Stone for their work on the bill.
